Altering the content of carbon in steels leads to a change in the properties of the respective alloys. Carbon steels, based on their content could be segregated into three classes - high carbon, medium carbon and low carbon steels. A percentage of less than 0.30% carbon dictates that the steel be classified as a Low Carbon tube. Along with being the least costly amongst carbon steels, it tends to be more pliable. Thus it proves to be an effective choice for those applications where ductility is a necessity. Contrary to its lower version, its percentage in a High Carbon pipe is range bound between 0.61% to 1.5% carbon. Less ductile than the former, Carbon Steel Welded Pipe with higher amounts of carbon have superior hardness and tend to be much stronger.
Generally, pipes labelled as STPG are recommended for used for the transportation of liquid media like water, oil, and other fluids as well as gas, air and steam. The good performance of a pipe carbon steel stpg erw extends to temperatures as high as 350°C. The term STPG means Carbon steel pipes for pressure service. Applications that involve transportation are known to have high pressure environments. Hence EFW Carbon Steel Pipe labelled as STPG are well suited for this type of applications.
The lack of alloying material in regular Carbon Steel ERW Pipe is what makes it less costly. But it is also the reason why they tend to lack excellent corrosion resistant properties. Blackening is a process to generate a pertinacious oxide layer that implements some form of corrosion resistance. Essentially, erw black carbon steel pipe is not galvanized and is used in those applications that do not require the product to undergo galvanization. Although black steel pipes may be used to ferry across different substrates across rural and urban areas, it is not used to convey potable water for sanitary reasons.
