Technically, a Dom Tube is not a tubing, but it is a process from which they are formed. Drawn Over Mandrel or shortened as DOM is a type of a metal forming process. This particular process commences with an ERW or electrically welded formed tube. First, the ERW is cold drawn over a die and across the planes of a mandrel. Consequently, the size and angle of the die will determine characteristics such as the Outside Diameter or OD. Whereas, the Mandrel or the Plug used in the Drawn Over Mandrel Tubing will determine the Inside Diameter or the ID.

Generally, the chemical composition of a DOM Tube could be mild steel or stainless steel, depending on its use.  The principle properties required by any application will determine the use of any alloy in the production of either DOM Seamless or Welded Tubes. There are several advantages to using this metal forming process. For instance, the cold drawing process renders the stainless steel dom tube with an improved surface finish, better dimensional endurance, and the most potent weld strength attainable. In order to customize mechanical properties of the product and to improve properties like machinability, and enhance its toughness, the mild steel dom tube is subjected to a heat treatment after being cold drawn.
