Specification ASTM A283 covers four grades of carbon steel plates, including grade A, grade B, grade C and Grade D. These four grades are of a structural quality, designed for use in general application. Therefore, plates of this specification could be used in the manufacture of ASTM A283 pipe. Samples of the specified carbon steel grade is to be melt processed by either of the following techniques i.e. - basic oxygen, open hearth, or an electric furnace. The specimens are subjected to a heat and product analysis. The result of these analysis needs to conform to the required chemical compositions including the addition of any of the subsequent elements - manganese, carbon, sulfur, silicon, phosphorus, and copper. Specimens of carbon steel pipes are subjected to tensile tests, with the samples conforming to required values of yield point, tensile strength, as well as elongation.
In a no temper or treatment condition, ASTM A283 Grade A Pipe has the lowest strength and highest ductility in correspondence to the other alternatives of the carbon steel pipes under ASTM A283. Whereas ASTM A283 Grade B Seamless Pipe has tensile strength properties between a low to intermediate-range, with the addition of Copper that is known to heighten the corrosion resistance properties of this alloy. On the other hand, ASTM A283 grade c pipe has yield strength properties that range between low to intermediate. Hence grade C is used in the fabrication of carbon steel systems for both pressure vessels and boilers. Lastly, ASTM A283 grade d Steel Pipe is processed by hot rolling and has low to intermediate tensile strength. Although these properties are low grade D pipes tend to have a relatively higher strength in comparison to Grade C steel of the same standard.
