Butt welded fittings are usually produced by manufacturers with the guidance of standard EN 10253. This particular English standard is classified into three parts. While part 1 covers wrought grade carbon steel fittings, EN 10253-2 Fittings cover non-alloy and ferritic alloy steels whereas part three covers wrought austenitic as well as austenitic-ferritic or what is referred to as duplex grade stainless steels. Unlike part 1 and part 3, which are delivered without specific inspection requirements,  Butt Weld Fittings BS EN 10253-2 are to be supplied after being checked with a specific set of inspection requirements.

Typical materials used in the production of EN 10253 Butt Welding Pipe Fittings include grades such as 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, P235GH, P265GH, P355NH, and L450QB, etc. Similar to most European standards, the materials too have varying designations, which indicate if the material is to be heat treated, its application as well as its minimum yield strength in N/mm2. For instance, the designations in en 10253-2 p235gh include the letter P, H & G. The letter P stands for steels intended for pressure applications, the letter H stands for hollow section and lastly, the letter G is a reference to its general characteristics. The minimum yield strength of EN 10253-2 Elbow produced in grade P235GH is about 235 N/mm2.

Butt-welding fittings such as the en 10253-2 type a elbow is produced with a reduced pressure factor. The wall thickness at the bevelled ends, as well as the body of the fitting, is the same as a pipe which is produced with the same specified wall thickness. The resistance of a type A fitting to internal pressure is normally less in comparison to that of a pipe, which has been produced with the same specified dimensions.
